We want our events to be gezellig, a Dutch word that can best be described as a state of cosiness and togetherness — a shared sense of joy of spending time together.
Here are a few simple guidelines to make it gezellig:
- Someone entering the event? Be the first to say hello. People might be nervous and forget to say it back, this is never on purpose.
- Someone standing alone? Walk to people and introduce yourself. Not everyone is comfortable at reaching out. If you are, make a difference and be the first.
- Someone doesn’t say much? Include others in conversations. Ask a question to get them involved into the conversation.
- Someone else you want to talk to? Feel free to switch conversations. Simply let people know you’re going to say hello to others. The whole purpose of our events is to get to know your neighbors.
- Someone is offensive? Kindly remind each other: Let’s keep it gezellig. Sometimes people have a bad day and that must be ok. Try to stay kind because people who deserve the least need it the most.
